Lana Zak is an American evening anchor and principal weekend anchor for CBSN, CBS News’ 24-hour digital streaming network. She is is a multiple Emmy, Edward R. Murrow, Peabody, Frontpage, and DuPont awarded journalist. award-winning reporter and journalist who works for CBS as a news anchor. She joined CBS News in January 2020. She previously worked for ABC News, covering government and politics for radio, television, and digital platforms for a period of 14 years. While working there, she took different roles as she progressed upwards in her career.
At CBS, Lana has anchored major breaking news stories, including the passing of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg and the results of the 2020 election. She regularly interviews key political decision-makers, including Sen. Lindsey Graham, New York City mayoral candidate Andrew Yang, and Interior-Secretary Nominee Deb Haaland. Just before the runoff election in Georgia, then-Senate candidate Jon Ossoff pledged to Lana that no matter the outcome, he would “accept the election results.” And after the January 6 assault on the U.S. Capitol, House Whip James Clyburn made headlines when he told Lana he believed the assault was an “inside job.”
At ABC, she was an anchor producer for Diane Sawyer, rising to the position of Coordinating Producer for ABC News Special Units. She has been integral on many of ABC’s biggest stories including the Sandy Hook shooting, the Jacqueline Kennedy Interview, Jaycee Dugard’s Triumph Over Kidnapping, the Prescription for America Forum at the White House, and the incredible recovery of Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords. While producing for Bob Woodruff, she became the first female in history to climb the barrels of the iconic George Washington Bridge.
Prior to working at ABC, she was a communication officer at Columbia University from 2004 to 2006. Before then, she was also an Associate Director of Policy from 2003 to 2004 at the City of Providence. She won Emmy and Edward R. Murrow awards for her work. She was also a Fulbright Scholar and a Truman Scholar.
She attended Bettendorf High School then proceeded to the University of Iowa and has a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science and Journalism- Mass Communications (1996-2000). She also has a master’s degree in Public Policy, International Security, and Political Economy from Harvard University- John F. Kennedy School of Government.
