Carl Hayman Biography – Carl Hayman Wiki
Carl Hayman born Carl Joseph Hayman is a retired New Zealand rugby union footballer who played at tighthead prop. In the past, he has played for the Highlanders in Super Rugby, Otago in the NPC, and Newcastle Falcons in the English Premiership, as well as making 45 appearances for New Zealand at the international level. He announced his retirement from professional rugby in January 2015, at the age of 35.
He became the 1000th All-Black when he made his debut against Samoa in 2001. Since then he established himself as one of the elite props in world rugby. In 2005, Hayman played for the New Zealand Māori, against Fiji in Suva, and against the British & Irish Lions at Hamilton. In 2006 he was shortlisted as one of 5 candidates for New Zealand Player of the Year. On April 19, 2007, it was announced that Hayman had signed a three-year contract with Guinness Premiership side Newcastle Falcons, turning down an offer from league champions Sale Sharks to do so. A club source said of the signing “every top club in Europe has been chasing him, but he’s chosen to come to Newcastle and we’re delighted he has made that decision”.
He reportedly became the best-paid rugby union player in the world after joining Newcastle Falcons on a contract reportedly worth $NZ one million (£350,000); a year until 2010. This contract was partly funded by Northern Rock – Newcastle Falcons’ sponsor. Hayman made his Falcons debut as a replacement in the EDF Energy Cup match at London Wasps on December 1, 2007.
On March 22, 2010, it was announced that Hayman would join French club Toulon at the end of the season. He becomes one of a number of high-profile players that signed for Toulon alongside Jonny Wilkinson, Juan Martín Fernández Lobbe, Felipe Contepomi, and Joe Van Niekerk. The decision to stay in Europe made him ineligible for the 2011 Rugby World Cup due to the New Zealand Rugby Union’s policy of only selecting players who have played in the New Zealand domestic competition.
He was selected in the Barbarians squad to play Tonga on November 26, 2010. In May 2013 he began as Toulon won the 2013 Heineken Cup Final by 16–15 against Clermont Auvergne. On January 6, 2015, Hayman announced his retirement from professional rugby at the end of the 2014–15 Top 14 season. As of 2021, Hayman manages his work-life balance as the owner of a small charter boat company in New Plymouth.

Carl Hayman Health
In early November 2021, Hayman revealed to The Bounce in an interview about the diagnosis (early-onset dementia) and probable chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) after medical tests in England that included a brain scan that can identify changes in the brain’s white matter.
“I spent several years thinking I was going crazy. At one stage that’s genuinely what I thought. It was the constant headaches and all these things going on that I couldn’t understand…” Hayman told New Zealand sports website The Bounce.
Hayman believes that lengthy service has contributed to his condition. He said it was not just a concussion issue, but the number of subconcussive hits, some coming in training, that most concerned him as he is left to battle probable chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE).CTE is a progressive brain condition largely associated with former NFL players and boxers.
Hayman has joined the lawsuit being prepared on behalf of 150 former professional rugby players, nine of whom are claimants, including England’s World Cup-winning hooker Steve Thompson, former Wales No8 Alix Popham, and Michael Lipman, who played 10 tests as a flanker for England. The landmark suit claims rugby’s governing bodies, including World Rugby, failed to protect players from the risks caused by concussions and sub-concussions, despite being armed with the knowledge and evidence to do so.
Speaking on TVNZ’s Seven Sharp in late June 2022, as part of a dementia awareness event ‘A Light in the Darkness’, Hayman spoke about his life with the brain condition.
“I’ve got various symptoms from changes in mood to forgetfulness to constant headaches. It was pretty much zapping the life out of me really. It’s been incredibly tough, but it’s a matter of accepting that my brain energy is half full compared to other people, so I need to be careful about what I use that energy on. I need to plan my day, not take too much on, and have little achievable goals for the day. Having that understanding and the tools to help deal with things, has really given me hope to move forward, in terms of having a productive future.”
