Susan Kikwai born Susan Chepkoech Kikwai was the incumbent deputy governor of Kericho County. She succumbed to covid 19 on March 20, 2021, after being admitted to Siloam Hospital for treatment for a period of two weeks. She was serving her second and last term in office having been elected as deputy governor in 2013 and subsequently as a deputy in 2017. Prior to joining politics, she was the managing director of Kenya Investment Authority from 2005 to 2012 under the Ministry of Finance.
She got an award – The Order of Grand Warrior of Kenya (OGW) by the former president of Kenya Mwai Kibaki for her outstanding performance in the promotion of Investment. In the year 2008, she was elected as the President of the African Investment Promotion Agency Network ( AfrIPAnet) by 45 African Nations. She also was a servant of Kenya’s national government whereby she was influential in attracting a major number of domestic, regional, and international investments. In 2003, she became a recipient of Awards that helped in the growth of investments. She also received the Department of the Year Award among other Awards and Honors.
Being an ardent individual in entrepreneurship and investments, she was at the forefront and led in the organizing of the first-ever County Investment Conference (KECICO). There were Ward Investment Consultative Forums held where each ward showcased what they could produce. This concept we dubbed ‘One Ward, One Product’. She also served in various capacities as a board member such as in Export Promotion Council, vision 2030 Delivery Board, and Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA). She had a key impact in creating a fora that helped address the promotion of business in Kenya’s already established industries and those that were growing.
She was a graduate with a Masters of Business Administration in International Management from Morgan State University in Maryland. For her undergraduate, she had studied Bachelor of Science in Economics and also had a second degree, Bachelor of Arts French from Salve Regina University in Rhode Island.

Susan died on Saturday, March 20, 2021, while in hospital as a result of battling Covid-19. The county communications office of Kericho released a statement saying that the deputy governor succumbed early Saturday morning. Notable leaders went ahead to grieve the departed leader. President Uhuru Kenyatta sent a message of condolence to her family, the governor of Kerich County, and the people of Kericho county. The President termed the deceased county leader as a devoted public servant who was deeply committed to the wellbeing and progress of the Kenyan nation.
“Susan was a great public servant. While working for the National Government, she was instrumental in attracting various domestic, regional, and international investments,” the President said. President Kenyatta prayed to God to give comfort and resilience to the family of Ms. Kikwai and residents of Kericho at this difficult time of mourning.
