Kirsty Cockburn is a journalist and a collaborator on many of Negus’s projects. She is the wife and widow of George Negus an Australian journalist, author, television, and radio presenter specializing in international affairs.

Negus presented at 6.30 with George Negus on Network Ten. He remained the director of his media consulting company, Negus Media International till his demise in October 2024. He wrote several books, including one based on his time in Italy, and co-wrote a six-part series of children’s books with her in the early 1990s.

According to the website, Negus Media International, Kirsty manages George’s complex public and professional commitments. She served as a journalist, a career spanning twenty years in print and television with national Australian media organizations including the Herald group and Channel Nine.

Kirsty inherited NMI’s business management: financing, executive production, and marketing of several independent documentaries featuring George Negus. Together with George, she developed and wrote a series of Penguin-published children’s books called Trev the Truck based in rural Australia. All photographs including the cover of The World From Italy and The World From Islam were taken by Kirsty who also assisted George with research and logistics.

Her career highlights include her award-winning reporting of Southern Australia’s devastating Ash Wednesday bushfires; mini-documentaries on The Midday Show; bureau correspondent and feature writer in several Australian states; and since 1984, her ongoing research of the life of pianist David Helfgott (subject of the international movie, Shine). She also takes part in activities such as bush regeneration; an aniseed myrtle plantation, as well as working with the community and educational (including Italian!) organizations.

Her husband Geroge, was diagnosed with dementia and was moved into a Sydney nursing home in late 2021 after being diagnosed with dementia. Their family released a statement on Wednesday, February 17, 2022, about his condition.

The statement read, “As a family, we are sharing the new path we walk as George faces the realities of his diagnosis of dementia from Alzheimer’s disease. We continue to share wonderful family times and are grateful for the care and support we have had from extended family and friends over the past few years who understand our challenges,” the statement read. “George continues to give and receive the love and respect of us all. We appreciate all the good wishes from near and far at this time.”

She shares two children with her husband George Negus. They are Serge Cockburn and Ned Cockburn. Their children were raised on a farm near Bellingen on the New South Wales northern coast, where they resided for 15 years with their family.

Her son, Serge Cockburn was a child actor. He portrayed the character, Mikey Dundee alongside Paul Hogan in Crocodile Dundee in Los Angeles.
