Damarr Brown is an American Chef de Cuisine at Virtue restaurant located on the south side of Chicago. He is a contestant on the nineteenth season of the American reality television show: Top Chef alongside 14 other contestants. The show was filmed in Houston Texas and the winner gets to win a prize worth $250,000 and the title. According to his bio on Bravo television’s website, he fell in love with cooking at a young age while spending time in the kitchen with his grandmother.
Influenced by Emeril Lagasse and Julia Child, he enrolled in The Cooking and Hospitality Institute of Chicago. When he graduated in 2011, he prioritized undertaking his internship under a Black chef. He joined Chef Erick Williams’ team at MK The Restaurant, where he worked through each station, while also assisting Williams at County Barbeque. He left MK in 2017 to be Chef Andrew Brochu’s sous at Roister, and after a two-year stint, he reunited with his original mentor, Williams, to open Virtue Restaurant.
The chef formalized his culinary skills at Le Cordon Bleu College of culinary arts in Chicago and continued to train in some of the cities’ finest kitchens including MK, the Capital Grille, and one Michelin-starred restaurant Roister. Damarr reunited with his mentor Erick Williams to open Virtue, which was named one of America’s Best New Restaurants by Esquire in 2019. His culinary focus at Virtue draws from familiar flavors he grew up with, pairing them with his learnings and takeaways from past kitchens.
