Claire dela Fuente was a singer of Filipino origin who emerged to the limelight through her jukebox hit Sayang in the 1970s. She died on March 30, 2021, in the Philippines at the age of 63. Her style of singing led to her getting the name “Asia’s Sweetest Voice.” The album that she debuted with in 1977 sold out very well upon its release. After that. she proceeded to make the other seven albums. She had a lot of nicknames related to her music career and was also named the jukebox Queen.
Besides singing she was a businesswoman. She was the president of the Integrated Metropolitan Bus Operators Association (IMBOA), however, her bus license was declared null in 2011 for taking part in a nationwide transport strike. At age 15, during a singing contest, she won the grand prize. She went to the University of East and studied Accounting. While in her mid-20s she stopped singing and ventured into business coming up with King of Kings Transport in 1993.
Later on, she went back to school and studied transportation management at PUP. She proceeded to undertake her Masters in Business Administration at the University of Western Australia in 2005. She became the spokesperson of the transport industry in her country. She then went ahead to join the cosmetics field and opened a business dubbed The Skin Shop. She also opened a restaurant- Gracielo’s and Claire dela Fuente Seafood and Grill.
Together with Richard Carpenter, in 2008, they came up with an international album – Something in Your Eyes. In 2010 with Michael Bolton, she recorded, The Christmas Song which was recoded under Viva Records.

She passed on on March 30, 2021, aged 63 as a result of suffering a cardiac arrest that developed due to Covid 19 complications. She was hospitalized in Pope John Paul II hospital in Las Piñas City, Metro Manila. after testing positive for the virus. Her son Gigo confirmed this to ABS-CBN News just hours after the veteran singer passed away. In an interview, Gigo said his mom died in her sleep. He also shared that his mom had pre-existing conditions like anxiety, hypertension, and diabetes.“She died from cardiac arrest, believed to be a result of her stress and anxiety. My mom has anxiety, hypertension, and diabetes, and her tendency to worry, to stress a lot, led her to weaken, and in her sleep, her heart gave up,” he said.
Many of the musicians and fans went to social media to express their grief at her death. Composer Jonathan Manalo took to Facebook to express his tributes to the departed OPM singer, “Rest in peace tita Claire de la Fuente.” Leah Navarro a musician also wrote, “Heard Claire dela Fuente died this morning. Condolences to her family. We performed together many times, she was proud to be called a Jukebox Queen. Rest In Peace, Claire.”
