Nathan Stapleton is an Australian professional rugby league footballer who last played for the London Broncos in the Kingstone Press Championship. He previously played for the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks in the National Rugby League. He primarily plays as a wing, fullback, and center. In 2022, Stapleton was taken to hospital after sustaining a neck injury in a rugby union match. He was left paralyzed immediately after the accident.
Born in Deepwater, New South Wales, he played his junior football for Glen Innes Magpies before being signed by the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks. He played for Cronulla’s NYC team in 2008 and 2009. In Round 11 of the 2009 NRL season, he made his NRL debut for Cronulla against rivals St. George Illawarra. In round 5 of the 2014 NRL season, he scored 4 tries for Cronulla as they defeated the New Zealand Warriors 37-6 at Shark Park.
On June 30, 2014, he signed with Sydney Roosters mid-season for the remainder of the year. On August 6, 2015, he signed with the English franchise London Broncos on a one-year deal beginning in 2016. In 2012, he played for the Prime Minister’s XIII. He retired professionally in 2016 after finishing his career with the London Broncos 2016.

The former Cronulla flyer has been hospitalized with a serious spinal injury after fracturing his neck while playing country rugby union. Stapleton was hurt during the second half of his Boorowa club’s opening game of the season against West Wyalong on April 9, 2022.
The match was immediately abandoned while he was treated by a nurse on the ground. He was taken to the spinal unit at Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney, with a welfare officer at his former club, Cronulla, also checking on him and his young family’s wellbeing.
“During our game, last Saturday at West Wyalong, Goldies Men’s player Nathan Stapleton suffered a significant injury during the second half which led to the match being abandoned,” Boorowa Rugby Club posted on Facebook.”Unfortunately, during contact, Nathan fractured his neck and injured his spinal cord, requiring significant medical assistance. “Through an incredible effort from members of each club, Nathan was given first aid until paramedics could arrive.”
