Fatima Farheen Mirza is an American novelist of Indian descent best known for her novel A Place for Us (2018), which was a New York Times Best Seller. She was also honored by the National Book Award Foundation as a “5 Under 35” Honoree in 2020.
Mirza is also a recipient of the Michener-Copernicus Fellowship. A Place for Us is her first novel. After starting pre-med classes, she switched to creative writing and went on to gain a place at the prestigious Iowa Writers’ Workshop, where she was a teaching-writing fellow and whose graduates include Ann Patchett and Curtis Sittenfeld. Her first novel, A Place for Us, is a New York Times bestseller and follows an Indian wedding that brings a family back together during which parents Rafiq and Layla must reckon with the choices their children have made. She says she first had the idea for the book when she was 18.
The novel was reviewed by the New York Times, the Los Angeles Review of Books, and The Washington Post. The book was a 2018 bestseller and was named among the best books of 2018 by The Washington Post, Buzzfeed, and People magazine. She attended the University of California -Riverside and is a graduate of the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, where she was a Teaching-Writing Fellow. She has taught at the University of Iowa and New York University.
