Jamey Rootes was an American sports executive. He served as a long-term president of the Houston Texans of the National Football League. He was responsible for the business operations of the team. Before joining the Texans, he was president and general manager of the Columbus Crew of Major League Soccer.
The former sports executive worked for the Texans for over 20 years before announcing his resignation in February 2021. Rootes worked as chief executive officer of the Houston Dynamo FC of Major League Soccer and Houston Dash of National Women’s Soccer League before stepping down 18 days later. After departing from the soccer franchise Rootes taught at Sam Houston and a week prior to his demise, he joined the faculty at Rice to teach there. He ran the business operations as the right-hand man for team founder, Bob McNair.
He studied at Clemson University, where he was a member of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity and played on the soccer team. He earned an MBA at Indiana University Bloomington, where he also served as an assistant soccer coach.

The Texans organization released a Twitter statement on Monday night of their former leader’s passing, reflecting on his long ties to the city and NFL team.

For two decades, Jamey led our business operations with an unwavering commitment to Houston and the Houston Texans. We are grateful for his steadfast leadership and immeasurable contributions to our team. Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with Jamey’s wife, Melissa, and their two children during this extremely difficult time,” Janice, Cal, and Hannah McNair said in a statement.
