Sally Pearson OAM is a retired Australian athlete. She is the world champion of 2011 and 2017 and the 2012 Olympic champion in the 100 meters hurdles. At the 2008 Summer Olympics and the 2013 World Championships, she managed to win a silver medal in the 100 m hurdles. While still in primary school, her athletic talents were noted by Sharon Hannan, and she coached her until 2013. In 2001, she rose to fame at 14 when she won the Australian Youth 100 m and 90 m hurdles titles. She made an international debut at the 2003 World Youth Championships in Sherbrooke, Canada after injury blows in 2002 and she won gold in the 100 m hurdles. She went on to represent Australia in 2003 at an open level in Paris for the world championships. She won a bronze in the 100 m at the World Junior Championships in 2004.
While at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, she stumbled over a hurdle and fell at the 100 m hurdles final and did not manage to win. In 2007, she went on to participate both the 100 m and the 100 m hurdles, making the semi-final of each event at the World Championships in Osaka, Japan. In 2008 she changed to solely participation in 100 m hurdles races. She won a silver medal and was happy with her performance. In 2009 European season, she was in good shape and won five out of seven races breaking the Australian and Oceanian record in the 100 m hurdles at the Herculis meeting in July, with a time of 12.50 seconds; 0.03 faster than the area record she had set on the same track a year earlier.Nevertheless,she was hindered by back spasms in the lead up to the World Championships in Berlin, and managed to take the fifth position in the 100 m hurdles final.
She took part in the 100 m sprint together with the 100 m hurdles at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi, India in 2010. In the final of the 100 m she had a false start, together with English runner Laura Turner, but was given the chance to line up but was later on disqualified after people protested after the race. In subsequnt games, she went ahead to be the first Australian woman to win three national titles at the same event since Pam Kilborn had done in 1968. She took part in 2011 world championships and 2012 olympics winning gold. In 2015 she suffered an injury that spoilt the entire season. The folowing year 2016,she also did not participate in Rio 2016 games after tearing her harmstring. In the 2017 world championships, she won a gold medal in the 100 metres hurdles in London with a time of 12.59. She was to take part inn 2018 Commonwealth games but withdrew as a result of an Achilles tendon injury.
She proceeded to announce her retirement on August 5, 2019. She stated: “It has been a long 16 years, but also a fun and exciting 16 years. My body has decided it is time to let it go, and move forward onto a new direction.”
