Karla Cruz Godoy is an American Educational Special Projects Manager at Big Picture Learning. She is a castaway from Survivor 43. The season premiered on September 21, 2022, on CBS and Global. She was announced as one of 18 contestants alongside Noelle Lambert, Geo Bustamante, and Cassidy Clark among others. Filming took place in Fiji for an eleventh consecutive season. She is part of the Coco Tribe in the competition.

Karla is an educator, activist, and strong advocate of Big Picture’s mission and values. Her love for Big Picture Learning originated from her own experience as an alumnus of the San Diego Met, Class of 2012. As a Bill and Melinda Gates Millennium Scholar, Karla earned a B.A. from UC Berkeley in Gender and Women’s Studies and Education and was inspired to tackle educational inequality by directly working in the classroom as a secondary ELA teacher. In 2016, Karla joined Urban Teachers, a teacher residency program, in Washington D.C. where she taught at the high school level while simultaneously earning a Master of Science in Education (M.S. Ed) from Johns Hopkins University. She also attended San Diego Metro Career and Tech for her High School Diploma from 2008 to 2012.

She serves as the Special Assistant to the Co-Executive Director at Big Picture Learning, where she provides strategic and programmatic support for a variety of projects including, but not limited to the Deep Learning Equity Fellowship, Ashe Leaders Fellowship, development/fundraising, and BPL’s annual international conferences. As of late 2020, Karla co-founded and is co-chair of the Big Picture Learning Alumni Association, a professional, social, and educational platform connecting BPL alumni nationally and internationally for professional and social support.

She is a castaway in Survivor 43. She is part of the Coco Team and identifies with the blue color. In an interview, she revealed that she is very competitive and an overachiever in every aspect of her life.

The interview continues: “Who is your hero and why? My grandfather, Elizafat Godoy. He immigrated to the U.S. from Chilpancingo, Guerrero, Mexico to provide a better life for his family, and he instilled strong educational values in me. He loves his family and my grandmother unconditionally. He’s the most important male figure in my life.”

“Which past Survivor will you play the game most like? Cirie Fields because she was an incredibly well-rounded, social, and analytical player. She was loved by all, she knew when to stir the pot, and she knew how to keep a strong social game that could take her to the end. I’m physically strong, so I’ll use that as an added advantage.”

She finalized the interview by saying, “Why do you believe you can be the Sole Survivor? I’m adaptable, resilient, and gregarious, and my ancestors have my back. I’m confident in my social game, that I’ll build relationships across differences and get along with just about anyone. With my wife and family in my heart and thoughts, I know I will make it to the end.”

Her parents are Mexican immigrants who became teenage parents at the age of 16, which led her to grow up in a low-income community where college was only a dream. Fortunately, the school became a safe space for her where she felt loved, cared for, and seen. She recognized that through school and could follow her passions and most importantly, get out of the hood. She expresses her pride as the first in her family to graduate from high school and the first to graduate from college, and she did it all with a full-ride scholarship from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation’s Millennium Scholars program.
