Ken Sim is a Canadian politician, businessman and mayor of Vancouver, British Columbia. He was elected Mayor of Vancouver on October 15, 2022. He is the first opponent to beat and unseat a sitting mayor of Vancouver since 1980 when Mike Harcourt upset incumbent Jack Volrich. Sim will be the first Chinese Canadian mayor of Vancouver. The politician will make history as the first person of colour to be elected to the city’s highest office, and he acknowledged that milestone in his victory speech.
He undertook his studies at UBC Sauder School of Business, graduated with a BComm in finance in 1993 and holds an FCPA and FCA accounting designation. He also holds a master’s degree in Entrepreneurship Executive Program Certificate, Entrepreneurship/Entrepreneurial Studies from the Entrepreneurs oRganization according to his LinkedIn. After school, his first job was at KPMG Corporate Finance as an accountant and then as an analyst. He has also worked at CIBC World Markets as an Investment and Merchant banker. In 2018, he vied for the Vancouver Mayoral Seat where he lost.
Sim owns and also co-founded the Nurse Next Door Home Healthcare Services with John DeHart in 2001. He is also a co-founder of Rosemary Rocksalt, a company that came to be in 2012. Since November 2019, he also serves as a board member for St. Paul’s Foundation. He is a two-time recipient of the EY Entrepreneur of the Year Award (Pacific Region) in the Emerging Entrepreneur category (2006) and in the Healthcare Services category (2016).
Sim is an active community volunteer and currently sits on the St. Paul’s Hospital Foundation Board. He supports health and harm reduction initiatives in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. In his campaigns, he has stated that he is working to bring a new approach to city hall, one that is focused on building a more affordable, liveable, and safer Vancouver. He first ran for mayor with the Non-Partisan Association in the 2018 Vancouver municipal election and finished runner-up to outgoing mayor Kennedy Stewart.

Following his win, he has promised to employ 100 police officers and 100 mental health nurses to tackle crime in B.C.’s largest city. He has also said those new hires — which would cost more than $20 million a year — would not result in an increase in property taxes. He has also promised to accelerate permitting, in order to address a lack of housing. He also promises to double the number of co-op housing units and has been supportive of the sometimes-controversial Vancouver and Broadway plans, which aim to increase density, particularly around transit stations.
Incumbent Kennedy Stewart and Sim also faced off in 2018, when the former won by a mere 957 votes. In his concession speech, Stewart said it had been the “honour of my life” to serve as mayor of Vancouver.
