Tom Dyas Biography – Tom Dyas Wiki
Tom Dyas is a Canadian politician who was elected mayor of Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada on October 15, 2022. He formerly worked as a Chamber of Commerce president. His win saw him defeat incumbent Colin Basran, who was seeking a third term. He attended Ryerson University in Toronto, Ontario, to complete an Associate degree in Business. Shortly after completing his studies, he landed a role as an Executive Chef at Delta Hotels and Resort from 1985 to 1986.
He first started with the insurance and benefits business in 1986 in Vancouver, BC. In 1996 he relocated to the Okanagan and continued to grow his insurance and pension business, building an efficient and robust organization that is supported by a successful office structure that serves upwards of 800 clients throughout British Columbia, Alberta, and Ontario. Since January 1986, he set up his own company TD Benefits in Kelowna, British Columbia where he fully owns the business. Prior to his elective post, he served as the president of the Kelowna Chamber of Commerce from March 2016.
Dyas ran a campaign focused on safety, pointing to the fact the city had one of the highest crime rates in Canada in 2021, at almost 12,000 cases per 100,000 people. Rather than hiring more police like other candidates in B.C. have suggested, he says his goal is to partner more existing officers with nurses, establish a community policing office at UBCO and create a citizens’ patrol. The mayoral race wasn’t close, with Dyas taking 62.17% of the votes, compared to incumbent Colin Basran’s 31.87%.
