He has worked frequently on Antiques Roadshow, featuring as an appraiser sharing knowledge on a number of intricate antique items. From 18th Century Welsh dressers to antique walking sticks, he has seen them all.

He is considered to be an all-rounder in the world of auctions, where many people have specialisms he is able to comment on a wide variety of antique items. He is most passionate about furniture and he particularly loves oriental carpets and 20th-century British art. He is an avid collector of antique items himself, his wife and himself have an impressive collection of Poole Pottery and vesta cases.

With his background in sports, he is considered to be one of the world’s leading sports auctioneers. He was the first to pioneer the auction of rugby memorabilia and is frequently chosen by the Welsh Rugby Players Association as an auctioneer. When in America he was frequently seen conducting baseball memorabilia auctions, a way of raising thousands of dollars for a wide variety of sporting charities. Most prominently he was the last auctioneer to conduct an auction in the Windows of the World and sat at the very top of the Twin Towers. He was also invited to conduct the famed player auction for the Indian Premier League, which saw him asking for prices of stars such as Adam Gilchrist and Mahendra Singh Dhoni.

Other than travelling, he says that Bargain Hunt has given him the opportunity to visit great antique fairs like Newark, Peterborough, Ardingly & Westpoint – which he has found fascinating and fun. He chose a career in antiques because his father was an auctioneer, my father-in-law was an auctioneer, and my mother-in-law was an antique dealer. He was inspired by his family.

He got involved in Bargain Hunt when he was approached by a former series producer to ask if he would like to try out for the programme as there were one or two possible vacancies. He went through an interview at BBC Bristol. A location screen test in Peterborough, another one-to-one screen test in his auction room and eventually an invitation to come and make a programme. According to his BBC profile, he began the collection with stamps then moved to coins but became hooked on bottles (all by the age of 11). His father bought him a box of Britain’s lead soldiers which he added to, then sold them all to buy his first house. He built up an impressive collection of postcards which he sold to re-roof that first house. He then built up an even better collection of Poole Pottery over twenty years which he sold to pay school fees. His current area of collecting is Wisden Cricketer’s Almanacks which he will probably sell to finance his nursing home fees.
