Michelle Miller is an American journalist and the co-host of Saturday This Morning. She joined the network in July 2018. She also works with the CBS Evening News and CBS Sunday Morning team. Previously, she has been a correspondent for the CBS news segment 48 Hours. She became part of CBS News in 2004.
She was born in Los Angeles, California, United States, and later studied at Howard University for her journalism degree. She also studied in Kenya and her neighboring country Tanzania. Additionally, she holds a master’s degree in urban studies from the University of New Orleans. She relocated to New York City after her studies and landed her first job as a national correspondent and a fill-in anchor for BET Nightly News.
Miller has also worked with the Los Angeles Times, the Star Tribune in Minneapolis as an intern, ABC News “Nightline” in Washington, D.C, WWL-TV in New Orleans, S.C; the Orange County Newschannel and WIS-TV reporter and weekend morning anchor in Columbia, South Carolina. She had a short appearance as a reporter in the movie Runaway Jury based on the novel by John Grisham in 2003. The following year in 2004, she joined CBS News. She started as a reporter on CBS News covering stories and topics that include; the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newtown, Conn.; the shooting at Chardon High School in Ohio; 2004, 2008, and 2012, coverage of the unrest in Ferguson, Missouri, following the shooting death of Michael Brown, medical care for the rural poor in South Africa, Hurricanes Sandy, Irene, and Katrina, the death of Whitney Houston, the 100th anniversary of the Titanic’s sinking and the presidential elections.
Miller has also carried out interviews with world leaders, celebrities, and politicians such as Oprah Winfrey, Nobel Peace Prize winner Wangari Maathai, Beyonce, John Goodman, Tony Bennett, James Earl Jones, Lenny Kravitz, LL Cool J, Carlos Santana, Denzel Washington, President Bill Clinton, former Soviet Premier Mikhail Gorbachev, and violinist Yo-Yo Ma.
She has garnered awards and credits to her name in her line of work. Some of the notable awards she has bagged include a Salute to Excellence Award from NABJ and was voted Woman of the Year by the National Sports Foundation. In 2014, TV Week named Miller as one of the “12 to watch in TV news.” She also has an Emmy for her series of reports on the National Guard’s Youth Challenge Academy, an Edward R Murrow for her coverage of a daycare center stand-off in New Orleans, and she was part of the Alfred I. duPont – Columbia Award-winning team for coverage the Newtown, Conn., school shooting. In 2019, Miller won a Gracie award for her reporting on the hidden world of sex trafficking in “’48 Hours’: Live to Tell: Trafficked.”
She is a founding member of the Women’s Leadership Initiative for the United Way of New Orleans and has served on the March of Dimes National Communications Advisory Council. Miller is a member of the Board of Advisors at Hampton University’s Scripps Howard School of Journalism and the Greater New York Chapter of the Links, Inc., as well as a board member for the School of American Ballet. Previously, Miller served as vice president of the YWCA of Greater New Orleans and president of both the Black Journalists Association of Southern California and the New Orleans Association of Black Journalists.
Miller has also participated in the Poynter Institute, was a Hitesman Lecturer at Louisiana State University’s Manship School of Mass Communication, a guest panelist for the Annual H. Naylor Fitzhugh Conference at the Harvard Business School, and a guest speaker for the National Model UN Program. Raised largely by her father and her paternal grandmother, Michelle had no knowledge of the woman whose genes she shared. Then, fate intervened when Michelle was twenty-two. As her father lay stricken with cancer, he told her, “Go and find your mother.”
Her memoir Belonging is the chronicle of her decades-long quest to connect with the woman who gave her life, to confront her past, and ultimately, to find her voice as a journalist, a wife, and a mother.
