Charles Hanson is a British auctioneer, chartered surveyor, and television personality. He appears on the BBC television programs Antiques Road Trip, Bargain Hunt, and Flog It! Hanson frequently appears on Flog It!
He has been in Antique Road Trip since 2010 as he travels across the UK visiting antique shops and competing with a fellow antiques expert to make the most profit. He has also appeared in For What It’s Worth in 2016.
Hanson is a chartered surveyor with The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (MRICS). His career kicked off in 1999 as a valuer at Christie’s in the European Ceramics and Glass Department. Thereafter he worked for antique workshops in Staffordshire and Chesire. Following that, in August 2005, he founded his own auction house Hansons Auctioneers and Valuers in Etwall, Derbyshire. They also have valuation centers in Staffordshire, Leicestershire, Birmingham, Shropshire, Stoke-on-Trent, West Midlands, and Warwick with regional representatives throughout the UK. After operating for a while, in 2016 his company opened a department specializing in coins and antiquities, named Historica.
He sold a Qianlong-period Chinese porcelain vase at £650,000, the most expensive item he has ever sold. The seller had used the vase as a doorstop for 36 years. His other major sales include a brooch that had belonged to Katherine Neville, Baroness Hastings, and the medals of Rowland Hill, 1st Viscount Hill, a commander at the Battle of Waterloo.
He joined the BBC television program Bargain Hunt in 2002. Auctioneer Hanson serves as an expert on the show advising one of two teams of contestants who purchase and sell antiques to come up with a profit. He was featured as an expert on the celebrity edition of Bargain Hunt in November 2018. BBC series Casualty stars formed teams to solicit funds for Children in Need.
Together with Philip Serrell, Charlie Ross, and James Braxton who are his fellow BBC Antique Experts, in 2017, they recorded a rock version of the classic “Sleigh Ride” to help BBC Children in Need. The song was produced by Grahame and Jack Corbyn who are father and son. It was released digitally on independent record label Saga Entertainment. The single ranked at number 1 on the Amazon Rock Charts.
He has participated in numerous charity events including the Stillbirth and Neonatal Death Society (now known as Sands) Raising funds amounting to £39,000 as a result of finishing the Great North Run in September 2013. He has also been involved in several charity auctions including the Herd of Sheffield and Careline.
