Liz Ellis born Elizabeth Margaret Ellis, AO is a former Australian netball player and television presenter, represented the national netball team from 1992 to 2007, serving as captain for the final four years of her tenure.
She holds the record for the most international caps for Australian netball players. In recognition of her achievements, Liz Ellis was honored with induction into the Victorian Honour Roll of Women in 2006.
After completing her secondary education at John Paul II Senior High School (now St Andrew’s College), following attendance at Holy Family High School, Ellis pursued a netball scholarship at the Australian Institute of Sport. Concurrently, she worked her way through the ranks of Australian netball while studying for a law degree at Macquarie University.
After completing her time at the AIS in 1991–1992, Ellis debuted for the Australian Netball Team in July 1993 against Wales. Her standout performance came at the 1995 World Championships in Birmingham, particularly in the grand final against South Africa. She continued as a key player for Australia, appearing in subsequent World Championships and Commonwealth Games. Ellis was appointed Vice-Captain in 2000 and then Captain in 2004, eventually setting the record for the most test matches played for Australia in 2005. She was honored as Australian Netball’s Most Valued Player on four occasions – in 1996, 1998, 2002, and 2006.
Ellis took on the role of captain for the Sydney Swifts in 2000 and led them to premiership victories in 2001, 2004, 2006, and 2007. Throughout her domestic career, she played exclusively for the Swifts, setting a record with 173 games in the Commonwealth Bank Trophy. Despite a serious knee injury in October 2005, Ellis recovered after undergoing knee reconstruction and continued to excel in the subsequent years. She announced her retirement from netball on 19 November 2007, shortly after leading Australia to a World Championship triumph over New Zealand.
Following her retirement, Ellis transitioned into a successful career as a netball commentator, starting with roles at Fox Sports and Network Ten covering the ANZ Championship and Australian Diamonds test matches. She later joined the Nine Network for coverage of the Suncorp Super Netball league and became a regular panelist on the Sports Sunday program.
In 2023, Ellis participated in the ninth season of the Australian version of I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here!, emerging as the winner. She also began appearing frequently as a panelist on Network 10’s The Project during the same year.
In October 2023, Network 10 announced at their 2024 upfronts that Ellis would co-host a revival of the sports entertainment competition show Gladiators Australia in 2024, alongside Beau Ryan. The show officially premiered on 15 January 2024.
