Benjamin Ayimba was a former Kenya Rugby Sevens head coach. His career began when he joined Impala RFC, club 1995 after he completed his studies at Maseno School between 1991 and 1994. Later on, he became the captain of Impala to two Kenya Cup league and Enterprise Cup doubles in 2000 and 2001. He also led the side to three National Sevens Circuit titles in 1999, 2000, and 2001. After coaching the Kenya 15s team shortly he took up a job to be the coach of Kenya Sevens from 2006 and 2011 and steered the side to a first-ever World Series final in 2009 in Adelaide, Australia before creating more history by steering Shujaa to a first-ever Rugby World Cup Sevens semi-final in 2009 in Dubai.
He made a return for a second tour of duty as Sevens coach in 2015 and led the team to a first appearance at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil as well as a first-ever World Series title when his side beat Fiji 30-7 in the 2016 Singapore Sevens final. He also played for English Cup side Cornish Pirates and was part of the Kenya squad to the 2001 and 2005 Rugby World Cup sevens and 1998, 2002, and 2006 Commonwealth Games.

He died on Friday, May 21, 2021, while at the hospital. The news of his death was confirmed by family spokesman Oscar Sudi, who said in a signed statement seen by Goal: “It is with great sadness we announce the death of Benjamin Ayimba on Friday, May 21, 2021. “Benjamin succumbed to the multiple complications he was being treated for over the past couple of months.”
Several Kenyans have taken to their social media pages to mourn him, with Harambee Stars striker Michael Olunga leading the way for the football fraternity which has also seen several top clubs in the FKF Premier League, among them Mathare United, Sofapaka, Kariobangi Sharks, and Wazito FC paid tributes to him. His funeral took place on Friday, June 11, 2021.

The cause of his death was as a result of suffering from cerebral malaria.

In May 2021, it was reported that Ayimba was ill in hospital, battling cerebral malaria. His eldest son, Brian, told The Standard Sports the hospital has asked the family to settle a Kshs.2.2 million bill before they can move him to Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) for specialized treatment. “The family thought it was not going to be this serious. So, we didn’t want to cause alarm but where we have reached now, we call upon the rest of the country to come to our help,” Brian said.
Kenya’s President Uhuru Kenyatta assisted in raising Kshs. 1 million towards Ayimba’s medical bill. The president’s act left many Kenyans happy as they perceived it as the act of utmost kindness.
