Angella Okutoyi is a Kenyan professional tennis player. She became the first Kenyan to win a Grand Slam title at the girls’ juniors Wimbledon event partnering with Rose Marie Nijkamp. At the 2022 Australian Open, Okutoyi became the first representative of Kenya to win a girls’ junior singles Grand Slam match. Playing for Kenya, Okutoyi has a win/loss record of 2–4.
Angella participated in the 2022 Australian Open bracket. She defeated Italian qualifier Federica Urgesi in three sets in the first round, and she continued her form against Australian qualifier Zara Larke in the second round, winning in three sets. She lost in her third-round match against Serbian player Lola Radivojević, 6-3 6-2, but her performance made her the first Kenyan in the world to progress to the third round in a Grand Slam. While at Wimbledon, Okutoyi won the girls’ doubles title with her tennis partner Rose Marie Nijkamp. Nijkamp is of Dutch origin.
On October 10, 2022, she announced through Twitter with a post stating that she will be continuing her tennis career and education at Auburn University. Okutoyi and her sister were brought up by their grandmother Mary as their mother died in childbirth. Her sister Roselinda Asumwa is also a tennis player currently playing ITF fixtures and local tournaments. While growing up, she was a constant fixture at Nairobi Club with her grandmother on the courtside.
“I didn’t grow up having much in our family so just being on this court gives me the drive to one day make my family proud and change our background to live in a good place… I want to do anything to make my grandmother proud,” Otukoyi said in a previous interview.
