Annemarie Powell is an American television news producer and the daughter of Alma Johnson and the late Colin Powell who was an American politician, diplomat, statesman, and four-star general who served as the 65th United States Secretary of State from 2001 to 2005. Her father died on October 18, 2021, while undergoing treatment for multiple myeloma at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. He died of complications from COVID-19 at the age of 84. His funeral service took place on Friday, November 5, 2021, at the Washington National Cathedral.
He was the first African-American Secretary of State. Prior to the election of Barack Obama as president in 2008, he and his successor, Condoleezza Rice, were the highest-ranking African Americans in federal executive branch history (by virtue of the Secretary of State standing fourth in the presidential line of succession).
