Barbara Gibbs is an American broadcast journalist, television host, and news anchor from Memphis, Tennessee currently working as a noon anchor for WTVD-TV and ABC eyewitness news. She became part of ABC11 Eyewitness News in 2001. She co-anchors the morning and noon newscasts with Eyewitness News Anchor John Clark, Amber Rupinta, and ABC11 AccuWeather Meteorologist Don Schwenneker. Prior to relocating to Raleigh, she was the morning anchor and reporter at WTVQ (Lexington, Kentucky) and then co-anchored the 6 and 11 pm shows at WSLS-TV (Roanoke, Virginia).
Having covered all kinds of news, her passion is telling stories about the positive power of the human spirit. In 2008, the Nashville Academy of Television Arts and Sciences awarded Barbara with an Emmy for best feature story for “Homeless Singers;” a piece about three homeless men in Raleigh with a desire to be gospel singers. She also received an Emmy nomination for a second feature “Barbara Gibbs’ Little Valentine,” a story about a young boy in Spring Lake, North Carolina, who touched her heart on Valentine’s Day. Some of her most moving experiences: traveling to New York City with a Durham breast cancer survivor to meet “Good Morning America’s” Robin Roberts. She also met a miracle family; a young mother with cystic fibrosis who survived giving birth and a double-lung transplant. She also had the honor of telling a soldier’s story; local veterans in the home building industry built a house for free for a triple amputee Iraq war soldier and his wife.
She loves being active in the community, participating every year with talented young, local golfers in the “Jimmy V Jr Celebrity Golf Classic,” raising money for pediatric cancer research. She has also taken part in various fundraising events benefiting groups ranging from the MDA, American Cancer Society, and Building Together Ministries. She attended Auburn University graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in journalism (Public Relations) and a minor in sociology.
