Black Rob whose birth given name is Robert Ross was an American rapper who was signed to Bad Boy. He was best known for the 2000 hit single “Whoa!”, which reached the Billboard Hot 100. He was brought up in East Harlem and started rapping at around 11 and 12 years. He drew his inspiration from artists whom he listened to so often like Slick Rick, Spoonie Gee, and Doug E. Fresh. He became part of his first rap group- the Schizophrenics at 22. However, the group did not release any album. As they were starting up his stage name was “Bacardi Rob”. He went ahead to associate with Bad Boy label in 1996 and featured in Bad Boy remix to 112’s “Come See Me”. Subsequently, he regularly appeared on numerous Bad Boy releases, like remixes to Total’s “What About Us” (1997) and Faith Evans’s “Love Like This” (1998), the song “24 Hrs. He also made two appearances on Cru’s 1997 album Da Dirty 30, as well as albums by Ol Dirty Bastard, Channel Live, The Madd Rapper, Benzino, Tony Touch, and others. These guest appearances earned him media attention.

In his earlier years in the rap industry, he was the leader of a rap team dubbed “Alumni”. His first album Life Story came out in 1999 and was highly sold out. At the beginning of 2000, he released the hit single “Whoa!”. Produced by Diggin’ in the Crates Crew member Buckwild, “Whoa!” became his biggest hit. The song peaked at number 43 on the Billboard Hot 100 and reached the top 10 on both the R&B/Hip-Hop and Rap charts. To date, it remains Rob’s only solo single to have reached the Hot 100. Although he continued to appear on releases by P. Diddy and G. Dep, he did not make another hit single. He came up with a second album (The Black Rob Report) that failed to perform as “Whoa” and was quick to fall off the Billboard 100 charts. Jemal Mosley from Off The Block Entertainment began managing his career in 2005. He left Bad Boy in 2020 and became signed under the independent label Duck Down Records. He released, Game Tested, Streets Approved in 2011 peaking at number 44 on the Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums.

After a while, he began his own independent label partnering with Jemal Mosley naming it Box and One. He became part of the reality television show “Come Back Kings” with Ed Lover, Calvin Richardson, David “Davinch” Chance, Jeff Sanders, Jameio, Mr. Cheeks, and Horace Brown in 2013. He featured on the song “Take ‘Em Off Da Map” on Diamond D’s recent album, The Diam Piece in 2014. He then released his fourth studio album Genuine Article on Slimstyle Records, which he produced with Jemal Mosley in 2015. In the album guest emcees included; Sean Price, Tek, battle legend Murda Mook, and Quas Amill. Choruses were sung by Ron Browz and others as his producers were Easy Mo Bee, Coptic, Big French, and others.

He served a sentence of over seven years in prison in 2006 when he did not appear in court for his sentencing on a charge of grand larceny from 2004, in which he pleaded guilty to criminal possession of more than US$6,000 worth of jewelry stolen in a hotel. He was released from prison in May 2010 and took part in an interview with Black Entertainment Television (BET) after two hours.

“We’ve lost another member of our Hip Hop family,” Van Silk tells HipHopDX. “Many may have been unaware that Black Rob has been sick over the years until Mark Curry posted the video from the hospital. My memory of Black Rob was when he used to come by DJ Kay Slay’s studio to do the mixtapes. He was someone who you would just wanna hang around with. May my brother Rest In Heaven.”

Fans have been paying tribute to the rap legend on social media, with one tweeting: “Whoa! Is one of my all-time favorite tunes man! Pure memories bumping that, and the Life Story album! RIP Black Rob.”

Another wrote: “Rest in Power Black Rob. You’re no longer in any pain on this Earth. Thank you for all the entertaining music you put out.”
