Christopher Sign was an award-winning journalist from Dallas/Fort Worth area who worked for ABC 33/40 as a news anchor. He was also a former University of Alabama football player. He first moved to Alabama after being recruited by Coach Gene Stallings. He played four years under Stallings and Coach Mike Dubose on a full scholarship for the Crimson Tide. With the help of Stallings and DuBose, he got his first job in Montgomery as a reporter where he got his first taste of politics. He then moved to Midland/Odessa Texas where Christopher covered the oil and gas industry and many of the area’s top stories.

Christopher and his wife, a former University of Alabama volleyball player, made their way to Birmingham working for ABC 33/40 as a reporter covering some of the most well-known stories in the state including the Brookwood deadly mine explosion. His coverage of a deadly Tuscaloosa tornado earned him a national Edward R. Murrow award. He earned several other awards including an Associated Press and regional Murrow awards for his coverage of former Alabama Coach Dennis Franchione’s surprise departure from the University, Mike Price’s short tenure, and several other high-profile stories.

Afterward, he then moved to Phoenix where he worked for nearly 13 years. Until his demise, Christopher was a morning anchor for the ABC affiliate. Among the accolades in Phoenix, he won 4 Emmy Awards during his time in the Valley Of The Sun and recognized for breaking the national story of a secret tarmac meeting between Loretta Lynch and Bill Clinton while Hillary Clinton was under the microscope regarding her email scandal shortly before the Presidential election. He wrote a book following the story called Secret on the Tarmac. The late Christopher was a member of The Arab and Middle Eastern Journalists Association.

Sighn died aged 45 on June 12, 2021. Police responded to a 911 call at a residence Saturday morning where they found him already dead. His death is being investigated as a suicide, Captain Keith Czeskleba of the Hoover Police Department told TODAY.

“Chris was a tremendous leader in our newsroom,” wrote ABC 33/40 on Saturday in tribute to Sign. “He worked with our reporting staff on a daily basis, but also worked behind the scenes with the I-Team and with news managers on coverage of major events. You were very likely to get an email from him with a story idea in the middle of the night. He was passionate about journalism and showed it each and every day as he pushed himself and his colleagues to be the best.”

Tributes from viewers and former colleagues flooded social media. “A light in our lives extinguished too soon. My friend and brother, you will be greatly missed. Much love to your sweet family. We stand with you in grief,” His co-anchor Brenda Ladun wrote on Twitter.

“My heart is hurting for you and the 33/40 family, as well as his boys and wife. Sending love,” one viewer replied on Twitter.
