Colin Young is a British professional expert on the multi-award-winning BBC antiques show, Bargain Hunt. He has been an expert on the show since 2002. Young is also a frequent contributor to a variety of print and broadcast media.
Colin Young studied and completed General and Mechanical Engineering at Stamford College. He returned to school in 1989 to study Fine Arts and Chattels at the College of Estate Management and graduated in 1991. In 1992 he received his valuation grade at Wakefield College. He proceeded to work as an assistant manager with Lyall & Co. in Bourne Auction Rooms after he failed to get a job as a mechanical engineer. In 1989 after three years of experience in the field, Young partnered with some of his colleagues at work and opened his auction firm Golding, Young & Mawer where he remains a stakeholder as well as a part-time valuer.
Professionally, Colin Young is the Managing Director of the auction firm Golding Young & Mawer of Lincolnshire. He joined the firm at the age of 21 as a salesroom manager. In 1994, Young was elevated to become the firm’s Principal Auctioneer & Valuer according to his website. The auctioneer is an Associate member of The Society of Fine Art Auctioneers, a Fellow of the National Association of Valuers & Auctioneers, and a Professional member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors.
He is also described as a charismatic and experienced auctioneer. His website goes on to say he has a no-nonsense charm, is fun-loving, and is highly requested for charity auctions, and television work as well as being a private speaker.

Young joined Bargain Hunt in 2002 and has been serving as an expert on the show since then. Besides that, he frequently contributes to several radio, television, and print media.
In an interview with BBC on how he got involved in Bargain Hunt, he answered: “My first involvement was to fail a screen test as an expert in the autumn of 2002 – I still have the letter of rejection! A few months later we hosted the “Bargain Hunt Christmas Day Special”. The series producer was so impressed and I got snapped up as an expert – I keep the nice letters too.”
He also stated in the interview that, his choice in a career in antiques was by chance. He said: It was not a choice, but simply the first job I saw in the newspaper for ‘manager’s assistant’ at The Bourne Auction Rooms. At 18 I did not know what an auction or an antique was. All I knew was the place looked interesting enough to warrant cutting off my 9” orange mohican for an interview. I suppose my only professional regret is that I had to have the haircut and pretend to conform.

‘Over the pandemic period, I let it grow into natural “Lockdown Locks” no different to anyone else. Then I heard about so many reported stories about “BBC Bargain Hunt fans shocked by Colin Young’s long hair”.’
He added that he decided to fundraise for Red Nose Day 2022 because of the popularity his hair received. Colin requested people to fundraise and he would get back to, mohawk, his signature style in 1986 which he did away with to attend a job interview. He proceeded to do as promised and shared pictures sporting the bright red punk rock do. His page – Just Giving- raised more than £1,000 in three days and the figures are still going up.
