Dawn Burrell is an American celebrity chef from Houston, Texas serving as Partner/Executive Chef, Lucille’s Hospitality Group, and Late August Restaurant, an Afro-Asian eatery. She was a cast member of Bravo reality TV show Top Chef season 18, which premiered on Thursday, April 1, 2021. At the season finale of the show, she finished among the last three contestants. She is also a retired long jumper who won a gold medal at the 2001 IAAF World Indoor Championships. During the airing of the show, Burrell will work alongside her Houston chef Sasha Grumman alongside 13 other chefs. After suffering an injury in 2001 that slowed her career in athletics, she went ahead to join the culinary field.
She began as an athlete in her high school in Pennsylvania where she won four individual state tracks and field titles. She then joined college and became a representative for the University of Houston at NCAA Track and Field Championships from 1993 to 1995. She then proceeded to be the United States Olympian in the long jump at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. According to Houston Chronicle, after suffering multiple injuries she stopped competing as an athlete and a trainer in 2008 and ventured into being a chef. She took jobs in catering and in the culinary field working in high-profile restaurants and eventually in 2020 became a semifinalist for Best Chef Texas for the James Beard Awards. She newly partnered with Chris Williams of Lucille’s to come up with Lucille’s Hospitality Group which will assist her to steer her own restaurant, Late August.
She started by taking up classes in Culinary Arts at the Art Institute of Houston. Through the assistance of renowned chefs such as Chef Tom Aikens in London, she was able to sharpen her skills in the art of cookery. She also worked at Monica Pope and Uchi owned by Tyson Cole. After that, she proceeded to be the sous chef at Uchiko in Austin. She then became Kulture’s Executive Chef sharpening her trademark “global comfort” style of cooking earning her first nomination for Best Chef.
