Declan Cleary is an Australian carpenter with his own carpentry business. He is a contestant on series 15 of MasterChef Australia alongside Cath Collins and Brent Draper.
He has stated that fish and seafood are his favorite. Declan worked in hospitality as a teen and got a taste of the industry, observing chefs and learning on the job. Not daunted by cooking for large numbers, Declan has often been behind the stove for family Christmas and birthday celebrations.
The MasterChef contestant is often inspired by eating out in Sydney and looks up to cooking greats including Josh Niland, Nigella Lawson, and Anthony Bourdain. He also shares a definite affinity with judge Andy Allen, whose path through competition Declan would love to emulate.
Approaching everything in life with joy, down-to-earth Declan wants to prove that his love of food could be more than just a hobby. Aiming to push himself and expand his skillset through the competition, he hopes to inspire other young tradies to get into the kitchen.
Having put his carpentry business on hold for the competition, Declan’s dream is to open his own seafood restaurant, and who knows, maybe build it too.

In an interview, he said “Being away from the missus was one of the hardest things about being on the show,” Declan admits, adding that he never thought Talya, who’d been his friend for a few years, would become his girlfriend. “I thought she was too good for me!”
Now, after three years together, he can’t wait to marry the love of his life, declaring, “I’m sure she’s the one.”
