Devon Smith is a former professional Australian rules footballer. He played for the Essendon Football Club and GWS Giants in the Australian Football League (AFL). Smith previously played for Greater Western Sydney from 2012 to 2017. Recruited with the 14th overall pick in the 2011 national draft. He made his debut in the opening round of the 2012 AFL season against Sydney at ANZ Stadium. Before his drafting, he was brought up in the town of Lara, Victoria.
He received a nomination for the 2012 AFL Rising Star after he collected 21 disposals, six tackles, five inside-50s, and kicked two goals in a 34-point win against Port Adelaide. At the conclusion of the 2017 AFL season, he requested and was granted a trade to Essendon. After the end of season 2018, Smith was awarded the Crichton medal, naming him the best and fairest player for Essendon in his debut season.
Smith only played eight games in the 2022 season, due to constant knee injuries. On August 12, 2022, Smith announced his retirement. He undertook his studies at the Geelong Grammar School on a sporting scholarship.

Devon Smith Retirement
He announced his retirement on Friday, August 12, 2022. He had a degenerative knee injury that has restricted him to just eight AFL games this season. He said in a statement reported by the AFL Australia website, “While it wasn’t an easy decision to come to, unfortunately, I couldn’t quite get the body to where it needed to be to perform week-in and week-out. I’ve loved my AFL journey and I’ve had the true privilege of representing two fantastic football clubs. I want to thank all my past and present teammates for all their support across the journey. As players, your time in the AFL goes by so quickly and my message to them this morning was that they shouldn’t lose sight of the fact it is a privilege to run out with your best mates every week. I’ll miss that the most.”

General Manager of Football Josh Mahoney acknowledged Smith’s service to the red and black over the past five seasons.
“While we’re sad to see Devon hang up the boots, we congratulate him on a wonderful career across two clubs over 11 seasons,” Mahoney said.
“Despite his body letting him down at times with his injuries, Devon was always hungry to get the best out of himself. He was an ultimate competitor and was selfless in his role when the side required it. Devon added immense tackling pressure and his ability to hit the scoreboard always strengthened our side when he was in his prime.
“We wish Devon, fiancée Simone, and their families the very best for the next chapter of their lives.”
