Donovan Bailey is a retired Canadian field and tracks Olympic athlete who at one time was the world’s fastest man. He was a specialist in the 100-meter races. In 1996 with a record time of 9.84 seconds, he won a gold medal at the Olympic Games. He was the first person in Canada to break the 10-second barrier in the 100 m races. In 2004 due to his performance as an individual, he was inducted into Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame, and in 2008, being part of the 1996 Summer Olympics relay team. In the year 2005, he got inducted into the Ontario Sports Hall of Fame. He went to school at Queen Elizabeth Park High School in Oakville, Ontario. His competitions started as a 100 m sprinter part-time in 1991. He was not consistent about the sport until 1994 when he became serious. He was working as a stockbroker at that time.
He was a competitor for Fenerbahçe Athletics in 1993-94. During the 1995 world Track & Field Championships in Gothenburg, Sweden, he scooped both the 100m sprint and the 4 × 100 m relay titles. Being a forerunner to the centennial Olympics in Atlanta in 1996, he broke the indoor 50-meter world record in a competition in Reno, Nevada. In 1997, he won a third-world title with his country’s relay team.
After the 1997 season, he had an injury when he was playing basketball at the postseason of 1998 which led to the end of his career. He tried in the 2000 Summer Olympics for Olympic glory, but he was suffering from pneumonia and thus he dropped out. He went to retirement from athletics in 2001. He started working as a track commentator for CBC Television in August 2008 at the Summer Olympics. In 2016, he made a comeback as the track analyst for CBC’s coverage of the Summer Olympics in the same year.
Later after the races, he went ahead to begin his own company called DBX Sport Management with the aim of helping untrained athletes find a way to promote themselves. In addition to that, he opened a sports injury clinic in Oakville, Ontario.
