Esther Choi is the Chef and owner of Mokbar and Ms.Yoo in New York City. Her sister Jeniffer is currently a Managing Partner as well as Controller for Mokbar. Jennifer decided to open up Mokbar with her sister, Chef Esther Choi- believing in the Chef’s passion for introducing Korean food and culture into New York City. According to her website, inspired by the time-honored techniques of her grandmother’s cooking, Esther believes that food is the ultimate expression of a country’s culture. From its history and social customs to its language, geography, and arts, she seeks to offer guests an understanding and appreciation of Korean food. It opened in the Fall of 2021. On June 15, 2022, she appeared as a challenger chef on Iron Chef: Quest for an Iron Legend on Netflix. She missed a single point to be named the Iron Chef. She scored 82 points whereas to be named an Iron Chef the ultimate score should be 83.
Since the 2014 opening of her first venture, Mokbar in Chelsea Market, she has been hailed as a “New Rising Chef” by the Food Republic and in 2015 was named “Zagat 30 under 30” NYC Culinary Rockstar. From 2018 to 2019, the chef hosted Eater’s “The Kitchen Gadget Test Show”. Currently, she hosts Get Down with K-Town, a podcast about Korean-American Culture, which features Roy Choi, Judy Joo, Charlotte Cho, Dumbfoundead, and more. Mokbar has two locations one in Chelsea Market and another in Brooklyn, with a third open in Midtown Manhattan.
She launched Sessy, a new CBD-infused toasted sesame oil. Created in Partnership with Pot d’Huile, Sessy contains 250mg of hemp-derived CBD per bottle, combining the distinctive toasty, nutty flavor of sesame oil with the healing and calming properties of CBD. Sesame oil is a major ingredient in everyday Korean cooking, just a teaspoon or two adds a rich burst of flavor to any recipe, from vegetables, marinades, stir-fry sauces, and even baked goods. Her formal training as a chef began at New York City’s Institute of Culinary Education (ICE), continuing in the kitchens of ilili and La Esquina, as well as that of the Food Network. However, Esther began her professional education at 14 when she started working part-time in restaurants.
