Evelyn Garcia Biography – Evelyn Garcia Wiki
Evelyn Garcia is the Chef and Co-Owner of Kin HTX. She cooked her way through New York City with stints at Jean George’s Spice Market under Chef Anthony Ricco, Masak with Chef Larry Reutens, and Kin Shop with “Top Chef” season one winner Harold Dieterle. After 10 years in New York City honing her skills, passion, and drive for Southeast Asian food and culture, she decided to move back to her hometown of Houston and open Kin HTX, a Southeast Asian-inspired concept. From pop-ups to chef residencies to a restaurant and a product line, Kin HTX continues to evolve and showcase Evelyn’s passion for Southeast Asian flavors/ cuisine and local agriculture.
She was a contestant on Bravo’s 19th season of the Top Chef cooking competition. She was a finalist and became the first-runner-up beating Sarah Welch and coming after Buddha Lo. The winner of the competition will receive an amount of $250,000, together with, S.Pellegrino Sparkling Natural Mineral Water and a feature in Food & Wine, and an appearance at the Food & Wine Classic in Aspen. The 19th season of this show took place in Houston, Texas. She opened Kin HTX in Rice Village’s food hall Politan Row in 2019, in hopes of dishing out Southeast Asian cuisine to locals and visitors alike. But after the food hall abruptly closed in November 2020 due to COVID-19 mandatory shutdowns, Garcia had to pivot. That December, García announced she was transitioning from serving up Thai food to catering and selling her line of Southeast Asian-inspired condiments and spice rubs at locations throughout Houston, including Local Foods, Henderson & Kane, and the Urban Harvest Farmer’s Market.
Kin still offers events and pop-ups, including a “Pupusa Lab” at M-K-T Sunset Market and brisket buns at the Heights Mercantile Farmers Market. Kin’s upcoming six-course Valentine’s Day dinner, crafted by chef Henry Lu and García, herself, is already sold out. The bio on Kin HTX’s Instagram page notes that the restaurant “Jūn by KIN” is coming soon. She graduated from Cypress Ridge High School, was a member of the Cy-Fair Culinary Academy during her senior year, and there, learned how to make dishes outside of the Mexican and Salvadorian cuisine she knew well, Chron reported.
