Gabriela Camara is a celebrity Mexican chef, restaurant owner, and author. Her first restaurant Contramar was opened in 1998 in Mexico City. The restaurant specializes in seafood. She opened the restaurant Cala in San Francisco in 2015. The chef holds ownership of Mexico City restaurants Capicúa, Barricuda Diner, and MeroToro. Her cookbook, My Mexico City Kitchen, was published in 2019, the year she was appointed to the Mexican government’s Council of Cultural Diplomacy and as an advisor to President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. She is a contestant in Iron Chef: Quest for an Iron Legend. The show streams on June 15, 2022, on Netflix.
She has twice been a James Beard Foundation award semifinalist, in 2017 and 2019. In 2019, Camara, her two restaurants, and their staff members were the subject of a Netflix documentary, A Tale of Two Kitchens. She also has a Masterclass course in which she teaches viewers how to cook Mexican food. The celebrity chef was included in Time’s Most Influential People in 2020.

Her father, a professor of education, comes from a large and prosperous family in Mexico City, and her mother, an art historian, is a Florentine who grew up in Philadelphia. The Cámaras met at the Catholic Center at Harvard as graduate students (Gabriela’s father is a former Jesuit priest, and her mother once had dreams of becoming a nun), and Gabriela was born in Chihuahua City, where her father had moved with the Jesuits to build a school and a health center. They were eventually joined by her mother, who completed a doctoral dissertation on mosaics in southern Italy. Gabriela and her brother were raised mainly in Tepoztlán, a town in a picturesque valley south of Mexico City that is a frequent weekend destination for families from the capital.
