Glenn Daniel was an Australian news journalist who had been working as a breakfast presenter on Smooth FM 95.3 since 2013. He was a three-time winner of Australian Commercial Radio’s Best News Presenter and won the Brian White Memorial Award for Excellence in Journalism in 2014.

He had also been a news director of four Sydney radio stations since 1982, having graduated from the University of Technology. In his career as a journalist in radio, he co-hosted the More Music Breakfast Show with Bogart Torelli in Sydney. He had worked on the radio for over 39 years. Earlier on in 2021, he launched a podcast called The Worst Day of Your Life which won two awards. In the podcast, he shared the stories of people who had survived adversity and traumatic events and used their experiences to help others change their lives for the better.

He started as a cadet reporter at 2WS and has since held the position of News Director at four of Sydney’s key radio stations (2SM, WSFM, 2Day-FM and Triple M) and spent 10 years as Group News Director of the Australian Radio Network. In his career Glenn covered historic world events including reporting from the killing fields of Rwanda in 1994, the 9-11 tragedy in 2001 and being on the finish line as Cathy Freeman won gold at the Sydney Olympics.

He also prided himself at being at the finish line when Cathy Freeman won Gold, Glenn worked across all formats during his distinguished career and had a huge impact on so many in the industry. Besides his work, he also loved kayaking, cricket, and The Eels and spending time with his children.

Nova Entertainment chief programming and marketing officer Paul Jackson said in a statement, “Glenn was a true gentleman, he had a beautiful soul, was kind, generous, and had time for all. He was a consummate professional for his entire 39-year career in broadcast radio and journalism.

His brother confirmed to Radio Today that Daniel was recovering from heart surgery at the time of his death, which he underwent two weeks ago (November 2021) in Sydney. Daniel was understood to have been battling heart-related illness.

According to reports, Daniel had endured heart trouble for years since being treated for lymphoma when he was 25 years old. He had a procedure two weeks ago (November 2021) at the SAN hospital in Sydney, with stents put into his heart in a non-invasive procedure. He was reportedly planning to return to work at the end of this month, having signed a five-year contract. He was then set to retire.

His brother Terry Daniel spoke of the loss of his sibling in an interview with the publication, describing him as ‘an absolute mate’. ‘When I listened to people speak at his book launch a while ago it was evident that he was so well respected and revered in this industry,’ he said. ‘He gave back so much to so many. Glenn’s passing is a loss not just to our family but to the whole industry.’Glenn was recovering from heart surgery and was looking forward to getting back to work after signing another five-year contract. After that, he was planning to retire.’ He went on to thank everyone for sending thoughts and prayers after his brother’s sudden passing.
