Jan Rot Biography – Jan Rot Wiki

Jan Rot is a Dutch singer-songwriter, composer, and lyricist who is famous in the Netherlands for his many translations of songs, pop as well as classic ones. His Dutch translation of Bach’s St Matthew Passion peaked in the Dutch pop album charts at Easter 2006. He became a musician in 1978, but a breakthrough was not initially forthcoming. He did work for several media and theater tours. In the 2000s he became a translator of hits by others and famous works of classical music.

In 2000, he took a different path, first as a translator and interpreter of world hits, but later also as a repeater of masterpieces from classical music. This change of course eventually brought him recognition. He received a gold record and is sometimes referred to as a “virtuoso her-talker”.

In 1978 he started his musical career as a singer, frontman, and songwriter of his bands Streetbeats and Ratata, but in 1982 he decided to continue solo. With a ‘novelty’ repertoire based on early pop songs, he released the album Single. The title, in addition to his newfound status as a solo artist, reflected Rock’s belief that every song on the album should in principle be a hit single. The singles Counting Sheep and Bobby, Roger & Eileen, pulled from the album, seemed to realize that ambition, but ultimately got stuck in the Tipparade, just like three later songs. Besides performing, Rot wrote a novel and became a columnist for Muziekkrant OOR.

In 1990 he made a change as a songwriter by switching from English to the Dutch language. He presented himself, slightly ironically, as a mixture of Pierre Kartner and the Trockener Kecks. The album Hoop & Liefde was the first result of this choice and it brought Rot acclaim, but little business success. Life song artists such as Jacques Herb and Anneke Grönloh would put songs by Rot in their repertoire.

In the 1990s, he developed a variety of activities. For example, he worked as a columnist for Avenue and Nieuwe Revu and presented the gay program Lieve Jongens Totaal on RTL. Musically, Rot became known during this period as the man who made his lack of success his trademark. Boudewijn Büch said about this: “Jan Rot is at the top of the Netherlands in cultivating his own misjudgment”.

In the meantime, his shows with cabaret and music attracted fairly filled halls throughout the Netherlands. Boudewijn de Groot called the album Schout bij Nacht ‘one of the most beautiful Dutch-language albums ever’ in the CD booklet of A whole tour Rock album Schout bij Nacht from 1995. In 1999, Rot’s composition E-mail to Berlin took part in the Dutch qualifying round for the Eurovision Song Contest, sung by the duo Double Date. Despite finishing last in that preliminary round, the song became a modest hit.

In April 2021, he became very ill due to a tumor in his intestines. On July 31, 2021, he announced that despite the removal of the tumor due to metastases, he was terminally ill.
