Janet Shamlian is an award-winning journalist who serves as a CBS News correspondent. She was hired by CBS News as a correspondent based in Houston in July 2019. Her work includes doing reports for CBS This Morning and the CBS Evening News. Before her current role, she served as a correspondent for NBC News. She also served as a reporter for MSNBC, NBC Nightly News, and The Today Show.
She was born in Oak Park, Illinois, and brought up in Park Ridge, Illinois. Shamlian competed nationally in figure skating while growing up in Park Ridge. Shamlian then attended Maine South High School in the same place she was brought up and graduated. She then proceeded to Missouri School of Journalism and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in journalism. In 2016, she was the commencement speaker for her former school.
Her journalism career kicked off at WOOD-TV in Grand Rapids, Michigan. She then worked from 1987 until 1993 as a reporter and doubled up as a news anchor at KHOU-TV in Houston, Texas. She became a general assignment reporter for WBBM, Chicago in 1993 later resigning in 1995. Janet joined KPRC-TV as a weekend news anchor and left in 1997 and became a stay-at-home to her five children. She began working as a freelance NBC News and MSNBC correspondent in 2004. After two years (2006), she was promoted to a full-time correspondent. In July 2019, Shamlian was hired by CBS News as a correspondent based in Houston.
In October 2016, she interviewed Arianne Zucker, the actress who Donald Trump made suggestive comments about in an Access Hollywood video recorded in 2005. Similarly, in 2016, she reported from the scene of the Orlando nightclub shooting and France, just hours after the 2016 Nice truck attack, where she was vacationing with her family.
In the past, she has reported on national and international events for NBC, including the Deepwater Horizon oil spill and Hurricane Katrina. Shamlian conducted the first evening network broadcast interview with Michelle Obama, on the NBC Nightly News in 2007. In her time at CBS News, she has reported on the mass shootings at the El Paso Walmart and Gilroy Garlic Festival and the California fires. Shamlian has earned some of journalism’s most prestigious awards including a Peabody, an Alfred I. DuPont-Columbia University Award, and several Emmy Awards.
