Jesse Lopez is a survey methodologist with a Ph.D. in Political Science from Durham, North Carolina. He is a castaway from Survivor 43. The season premiered on September 21, 2022, on CBS and Global. He was announced as one of 18 contestants alongside Gabler, Noelle Lambert, Geo Bustamante, Cassidy Clark, and Sami Layadi among several others. Filming took place in Fiji for an eleventh consecutive season.
As a teenager at the age of 16, he became part of a gang and became gang affiliated. While there he stated that he became street-smart and was able to read the room. Later on, he was taken to the juvenile hall but later re-emerged, attended school, and became successful. He said in an interview with CBS, “I went from being in a gang to be in a Ph.D. program at Duke. I just want to show that you can do anything you want.”
He started his studies and became a junior at UC Berkeley and later on visited Duke to earn his Ph.D. in Political Science as part of the Ralph Bunch Summer Institute program in June 2015. He chose Duke as his graduate program and coauthored scholarships along the way.

He is a castaway in Survivor 43. He forms part of the tribe dubbed Vesi. He was announced amongst the 18 contestants in the show competing to be the Sole Survivor. He is a researcher at Duke. In his CBS interview, he stated that his favorite hobbies include playing chess with his son and dancing with his daughter. He also spends his time binge-watching shows with his wife after the children go to sleep. Lopez describes himself as ambitious, aware, and unbreakable. Among the things he dislikes include; Quitters, people who complain about things but aren’t willing to change, and personalized license plates.
In his interview, he went on to state that he is proud of his family and what they have built with his wife. He is proud that he is able to see his children grow as they evolve through all the necessary stages of childhood, something that he never experienced but had always wanted. He is proud f building his family with his wife. Additionally, Lopez describes his wife as his hero because she has been present with him in every step of the way and has made sacrifices just like him to get where they are in life. She manages the household, and the kids and is also there to listen to him. He describes her as fearless and that she has pushed him to do better.
He went ahead to state that he would like to play the Survivor game like the previous Survivor contestants Spencer or Christian (David vs. Goliath) if they got jumped into a gang at 15. He believes that he is bringing an academic mindset to the game since he has spent more hours thinking about how people vote. Additionally, he regards himself as street-smart since his life growing up was tough. He believes that he will be the ultimate Sole Survivor because he has done research on voting behavior for years. He said, ” I don’t care if I’m out there with someone who never missed an episode of SURVIVOR or someone who played 3 times already, they ain’t gonna hold a candle to me strategically. But I’m also not an academic by nature and have gone from being a gang member to dealing with Harvard-level researchers on a daily basis—so I can adapt to any environment and build relationships with anyone.”
