Jim Axelrod is an American author and journalist. He is the chief investigative and senior national correspondent for CBS News. Jim does reports for CBS Mornings, CBS Evening News, CBS Sunday Morning, and other CBS News segments. He joined CBS News in 1996.

Jim was born in Brunswick, New Jersey. He studied at Highland Park High School, partook in his bachelor’s degree, and graduated from Cornell University in 1985 with a bachelor of arts in history. Jim also holds a master of arts in history degree from Brown University. He graduated in 1989.

After his studies, he landed his first job in 1989, the same year he graduated, at WVII-TV Bangor, Maine. He then proceeded to WUTR-TV Utica, New York the same year and worked until 1990. He left WUTR-TV in 1990 and proceeded to work as a reporter for WSTM-TV in Syracuse New York until 1993. Following that, he moved to Raleigh, North Carolina-based television station WRAL-TV and served as a political reporter until 1996 when he departed for CBS News.

Jim became part of CBS News in 1996. He kicked off his job in Miami working as a correspondent. He later served in the Dallas bureau and New York bureau until 2006. Immediately after that, Jim was named the CBS News’ chief White House correspondent from 2006 to 2009. In 2009, he became a CBS News national correspondent. He then started the role of an anchor for the Saturday edition of CBS Evening News from 2012 to 2016.

In his tenure at CBS, the journalist has covered both local and international stories according to his bio on the website. Some of his memorable stories include; the departure of U.S. troops from Iraq () in December 2011, the war in Iraq, and the American invasion of Afghanistan, he reported live from Baghdad’s Saddam International Airport immediately after it fell to U.S. troops and his live coverage of the U.S. Army firing artillery rounds into Iraqi positions was the first to be broadcast by a reporter embedded with ground troops engaged in combat in Iraq.

Jim’s work has earned him several awards and accolades. For example, he has received the Peabody Award for his series on West Virginia’s opioid addiction crisis, a George Polk Award for his work, and an Edward R. Murrow Award for his reporting on the genetic testing industry. He won an Emmy awards in 2002. 2014 and 2016. Additionally, he was part of the CBS News team honored with a 2010 duPont-Columbia Silver Baton for “CBS Reports: Children of the Recession.”
