John Cameron is a British professional auctioneer, antiques, and fine art valuer and an expert on the BBC television program Bargain Hunt.
He also appeared in Cash In The Attic in 2004 where he worked alongside presenters Aled Jones, Ben Fogle, and Alistair Appleton among others. He owns an auction house and a valuation business known as John Cameron Auctions.
Originally from Portsmouth, John completed his studies and proceeded to be a carpenter and joiner trainee. He filmed Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is for BBC 1 in 2009. He was contesting against another expert to purchase and sell collectibles and antiques to make a higher profit for charities of their own. On the show, he has also competed against Antiques Road Show Katherine “The Great” Higgins James Lewis, and Philip Serrell.
The auctioneer is a graduate of Fine Art Valuation. He is also a qualified member of both the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (Fine Arts) and the National Association of Valuers and Auctioneers according to his website.

He serves as the Cystic Fibrosis Trust patron.Cameron ran the 2010 Virgin London Marathon for the charity, and frequently helps other charities with his valuation and auctioneering skills including The National Autistic Society and the Caron Keating Trust, the cancer charity founded by fellow presenter and friend Gloria Hunniford.

He said to the BBC: Previous to working on Bargain Hunt I appeared as an expert on two other BBC antiques shows, ‘Cash in the Attic’ and ‘Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is.’ John is nicknamed “The Hammer” (a name bestowed on him by the show – Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is Producers).
When he was asked the reason for choosing a career in antiques he said: ” I grew up around antiques, as my grandfather was a dealer, however, on leaving school I served a five-year apprenticeship as a carpenter/joiner. As my £27.50 weekly YTS wages weren’t enough I supplemented my income by stripping, restoring, and waxing antique pine furniture which was very fashionable in the late 1980s. A reoccurring prolapse disc in my back forced me to give up my physical job and return to college where I undertook a three-year degree course at Southampton studying fine art valuation. I followed this with two further years studying whilst working at an auction house to become a chartered surveyor of antiques and fine art.”
When he was asked about his memorable Bargain Hunt team he answered: “A mother and son team Joy and Paul have been my most memorable team as they were from near where I live and were very relaxed and good fun to work with.”
