Lauren Bernett was a softball player and a great ambassador of James Madison University (JMU) and the school’s athletics program. She was a sophomore catcher and was a key member of the Dukes’ improbable run last year at the Women’s College World Series. JMU became the first unseeded program in the history of the tournament to reach the semifinals. Her death was announced by JMU President Jonathan Alger on Tuesday, April 26, 2022. She was 20. Bernett, who was of McDonald, Pennsylvania, began 43 games as the Dukes went 41-4 and advanced to the Women’s College World Series for the first time in school history. JMU Nation is a close community, and we grieve together.”

The school’s statement did not state a cause of death. Officials said it is not being treated as a crime. “Yes, we are conducting a death investigation at this time,” Rockingham County Sheriff Bryan Hutcheson said in a statement to NBC News. “It is not a criminal investigation as no foul play is suspected.”
