Liz Hayes is an Australian reporter, journalist, and television presenter. She is best known for her work as a reporter on 60 Minutes, and hos of Under Investigation. She is a former co-host of Today Australia. She was born in Taree, New South Wales, and later in life, she began her career as a cadet journalist on the local Manning River Times newspaper, becoming an assistant editor. She moved to Sydney and worked for New Idea and TV Week for a few weeks, before becoming a reporter for Network Ten’s Eyewitness News. She is also known for Recollection (2009), Frontline (1994), and 60 Minutes (1979).
In 1981 she was signed to the Nine Network, reporting for National Nine News and then presenting the National Nine Morning News. In 1986, Hayes was appointed co-host of Today Australia with Steve Liebmann and stayed co-host until 1996 with Tracy Grimshaw replacing her. In 1996, she joined 60 Minutes as a reporter and remains in this position today. In 2011, Hayes celebrated 30 years with the Nine Network.

She is married to her husband Ben Crane. Prior to that, she met and married, her first husband, Brian Hayes, a builder, in her hometown of Taree. Despite being divorced from Brian Hayes, she still uses his surname as her professional name.
She was also briefly married to the advertising entrepreneur John Singleton in 1991, his fourth wife. They divorced in 1992.

She is the daughter of Bryan Ryan and Patricia Ryan. Both her parents are deceased. She also has four brothers being second in the family. Her family lived on the family dairy farm on Oxley Island in Taree, New South Wales. Her mother’s family were “Irish Catholic stock” and her grandfather was a train driver.
In 2018 and 2019 she came face to face with the traumatic deaths of both her parents. “My mum had dementia. The great thing was she never forgot who we were, but dementia is bloody awful. To see that fabulous human being die in front of you is terrible.” She said.
“Dad was amazing. That’s the rock.” As she talks of her father Bryan in an interview, she began to tear up. Her father, Bryan Ryan, died aged 88 after suffering a stroke while recovering from pneumonia in a private hospital in Taree, northern New South Wales, on September 11, 2020. Investigations found that a blood-thinning medication, Aprixaban, prescribed to prevent stroke in people with heart disorders was not given to her father for eight days. That fatal decision was later revealed to be ‘a medical error’.
