Marianne Alto is a Canadian mayor of Victoria, British Columbia. She was voted in on October 15, 2022. She is a long-time councillor who previously served as a Victoria city councillor for three terms before running for mayor. She replaces former mayor Lisa Helps who held the position since 2014 and who did not seek re-election in 2022. Eight people were competing for the position and Alto emerged as the ultimate winner. Alto garnered 15,090 votes (55.5 per cent), defeating challenger Stephen Andrew who received 9,775 (36 per cent). In 2022, Alto will be the 53rd mayor of Victoria.
Alto is a facilitator by trade with university degrees in law and science. She is a businesswoman active in community causes for decades and was first elected to Victoria City Council in 2010. She was elected to the Capital Regional District Board from 2011 through 2018, where she chaired its landmark Special Task Force on First Nations Relations.
The mayor is a lifelong activist who vigorously advocates for equity, inclusion and fairness for everyone. She owns and operates Azimuth Research & Consulting, a firm specializing in problem-solving, changes management and facilitation, and owns a home in Victoria’s Burnside Gorge neighbourhood.
According to her website, she is the City Council liaison to the Greater Victoria Harbour Authority, the Te’mexw Treaty Advisory Committee, the South Island Prosperity Partnership, the Greater Victoria Public Library, and the CRD’s Royal and McPherson Theatres Society Advisory Committee. Alto is the Council neighbourhood liaison to Burnside Gorge, and a member of the City Family, having nurtured a long-standing relationship with the Songhees and Esquimalt Nations. She was President of the Canadian Capital Cities Organization for 5 years and remains its Past President.
