She was born on March 9, 1977, and was brought up in Dundee Scotland. She went on to study at the High School of Dundee later joining the University of Edinburgh to pursue a course in law followed by a postgraduate diploma in law at the University of Dundee. However, she did not pursue a career in law and made an application to be a graduate trainee with The Sun. Upon her being accepted, her career in journalism then kicked off.

She started by being a graduate intern for The Sun while undertaking a diploma in a newspaper Journalism course at London City University.
