Melanie Persson is a Ph.D. student from Western Australia. She was a contestant in season 14 of MasterChef Australia which premiered on Monday, April 18, 2022. The format is known as Fans & Favourites and features 12 new contestants and 12 former contestants. She was eager to show Australia that gluten-free food can still be just as tasty after being diagnosed with coeliac disease five years ago. Largely self-taught from television cooking shows and social media, Melanie is a massive fan of many well-known foodies including Massimo Bottura, Adam Liaw, Matt Adlard, Marion Grasby, and Rick Stein. She was eliminated on May 24, 2022 from the show.
Born in Perth, Melanie was two when her family moved to Nagano Prefecture in Japan for three years before returning to Western Australia. They settled in Dunsborough, a small town in the southwest of the state near Margaret River where Melanie completed school. After her high school studies, she spent a year in the Italian city of Milan before returning home to begin university. She has been cooking ever since she could reach the kitchen bench and her food and tastes have been influenced by her experiences in Japan and Italy.
Although she loves reading and writing, she admits her pursuit of a Ph.D. in literature means she often does not get the chance to indulge in these hobbies for pleasure. Instead, she spends her free time cooking for her partner, friends, and family; getting out and about with her dogs, and playing board games and social sports. With a love of languages, she speaks Japanese and Italian and has recently started learning Spanish with the hope that she’ll be able to travel to South America soon.
