Paul Everingham born Paul Anthony Edward Everingham was the head of government of the Northern Territory of Australia from 1977 to 1984. He served as the second and the last leader of Majority from 1977–1978 and as the first Chief Minister of the Northern Territory from 1978 to 1984. His party membership was in the Country Liberal Party, where he represented the northern Darwin seat of Jingili in the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly from 1974 to 1984. He shortly was a Deputy Majority Leader under Goff Letts from 1974 to 1975. He was part of the backbench for the remaining part of the First Assembly.
After a few months of being re-elected to the legislature, he was dubbed the leader of the CLP and the Majority Leader after Letts was beaten in his own electorate. He, therefore, took the role of overseeing the transition to self-government, which took place in 1978. During that period, he rose to Chief Minister with considerably expanded powers. He became the second and longest person in government to serve in the territory thus brought CLP to winning elections in 1980 and 1983. At that particular time opposition was not competitive.
He went for his resignation as CLP leader in mid-1984 and also from the Legislative Assembly to enable him to be elected to the Australian House of Representatives as a member for the Division of Northern Territory. Initially, he was greatly favored up against Labor incumbent John Reeves. The race was competitive with Reeves reducing the gap as campaigns continued. He went ahead to lead during the elections on the fourth count and he won by 1,800 votes. He showed an example at his single term in Canberra when he decided to sit with the Liberals. When his time elapsed in the House of Representatives, he had a session as President of the Queensland Liberal Party. He was a recipient of the award Paul Everingham: Officer of the Order of Australia.
