Peter Van Sant is an American journalist. He is a television news reporter and correspondent for the American documentary television show CBS, 48 Hours. He is also an author and assisted in writing the book Perfectly Executed.
Born and raised in Seattle Washington, Peter studied and later attended Washington State University. He studied for a bachelor’s degree in Communications and graduated cum laudein 1975. He also studied Communications at the Edward R. Murrow College of Communications. Following his studies, Peter proceeded to the job market and was employed by KAPY-LP in Port Angeles, Washington. In that same year(1975), he joined KMVT-TV based in Twin Falls Idaho.
In 1976, the journalist then moved to KCRG-TV in Cedar Rapids and worked for one year until 1977 when he left. He moved to KETV in Omaha working from 1977 to 1978. Sant then moved to Phoenix, Arizona working as a reporter and weekend anchor for KOOL-TV in 1978. He relocated to Dallas in 1978 and worked for WFAA-TV until 1984.
Peter joined CBS News in 1984. He served as a CBS Evening News correspondent based in Atlanta, Georgia for six years until 1990. He was designated to the London bureau in 1989 and his reports focused on the fall of the Soviet Union, German reunification, the first Gulf War, and famine in Africa. In 1991, he relocated to New York working as a reporter for CBS News magazines Street Stories until 1993, and America Tonight until 1994. Peter was designated to the CBS Evening News until 1997. From 1997 to 1998, he became a correspondent for Public Eye with Bryant Gumbel. He was the first TV journalist who report on the catastrophic famine in North Korea. Additionally, he was part of the CBS News undercover investigative team which taped an indicted war criminal in Bosnia.
Other major stories that he has worked on as a reporter include the Virginia Tech massacre, Hurricane Katrina, the September 11 attacks, and the reported 48 Hours Special on the Oklahoma City bombing in a documentary called Day of Reckoning. He has also interviewed celebrities like Ronnie Dunn, Garth Brooks, Lee Ann Womack, Kix Brooks, Julie Andrews, Nick Nolte, and Christopher Plummer. The focus of his stories has been on confrontational and controversial stories such as on Lori Berenson, an American jailed in Peru since 1995.
Peter’s investigative report on the high number of medical helicopter crashes won him his first Emmy Award in 1986. In 1997 he received his second Emmy Award for his report on the economic and social collapse in Albania. He is recognized as the first television journalist who reported on the devastating famine in North Korea, a documentary that won him his third Emmy Award. He received his fourth Emmy based on the documentary, Three Days in September.
Other awards to his name include: the Sigma Delta Chi Award for the report on worldwide human trafficking awarded in 2005, American Women in Radio and Television Award for his report on rapes in war-torn Bosnia, Alfred I. duPont–Columbia University Award for his reports on the collapse of the Soviet Union, Overseas Press Club Award for his investigative reports on illegal organ trading in Peru and report on Lori Berenson and three Edward R. Murrow Awards for his 48 Hours Mystery reports.
Peter co-authored the Book Perfectly Executed based on a story featured on the 48 Hours Mystery television show. He scripted and produced the documentary, Three Days in September on the Beslan school hostage crisis, which debuted at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2006. The film won him an Emmy award and was named one of the top documentaries of 2006. The documentary which was narrated by Julia Roberts, also won the prestigious Golden Word Award of Russia.
