Richard Schlesinger is an American retired journalist. He served as a television news reporter and correspondent for the CBS crime documentary show 48 Hours. He joined CBS News in 1984 and retired from CBS in 2022. His retirement came after 38 years of service to the media outlet.
Born in New York, Schlesinger attended White Plains Senior High School and graduated in 1972. He the joined The University of Missouri for his bachelor’s degree and graduated in 1976 with a bachelor’s degree in journalism.
Following school, the retired journalist was first employed by WPLG-TV in Miami where he worked as a political reporter. He won a Sigma Delta Award in that period. He was hired as Washington bureau chief for the Post-Newsweek Television Stations in 1980 and worked for four years until 1984 when he departed from the media house.
Richard joined CBS News in 1984 where he was deployed to Miami. His news store covered the entire region of the southeastern United States and South America. He became a correspondent at CBS News Northeast bureau from 1987 to 1990. At that time, he also doubled up as an investigative reporter for the CBS Evening News and as a substitute anchor for morning news and weekend editions of the news.
He became a full-time correspondent for 48 Hours from 1990 to 1997. Some of his reports included; marriage and divorce in the 1990s and recession of the middle class and cases of innocent Americans who had been imprisoned. Schlesinger reported for a two-hour CBS documentary CBS Reports: “Enter the Jury Room”, for which he won the Alfred I. duPont–Columbia University Award. The documentary examined the jury system in the US and was given access to the actual jury deliberations for the first time in the television industry.
He is a recipient of 10 Emmy Awards spanning throughout his entire career. Other than serving as a reporter for 48 Hours, Schlesinger also contributed to CBS News Sunday Morning. He retired from CBS News in 2022.
