Sam Quek is a television and radio presenter, English Olympic and European Gold medallist,and the former England and Team GB hockey player. She is a contestant in the twenty- second series of Strictly Come Dancing 2024. The show will return to BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
Born in Liverpool, England, she went to study at Hillside Primary School on the Wirral for a year. She progressed to Birkenhead High School and went to sixth form at Calday Grange Grammar School in West Kirby. She then proceeded to Leeds Metropolitan University and earned a BSc (Hons) in Sport & Exercise Science.
While still at Birkenhead High School, Quek began playing hockey and attended trials for the Wirral under-12 team. She was selected to play for Wirral County at the Merseyside Youth Games, and the team won the tournament. Quek was selected again the following year, when the team was victorious once more. She then joined a team called Mini Panthers, where she was coached by the team organiser Peter Cartmel, who had earlier selected her for the Wirral County team.
Sam Quek won 125 international caps for the England and Great Britain women’s hockey teams, including a Gold Medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics. In 2017, Sam Quek was awarded an MBE for Services to Hockey.
She is now a broadcaster and has presented on BBC Morning Live and was a Team Captain on Question of Sport. Sam Quek presents for a range of sports including Football, American football, Rugby and Cricket. She co-anchored the BBC’s Tokyo Olympic Games Breakfast programme and regularly appears on programmes across the BBC’s radio channels.
Sam Quek Strictly Come Dancing
Former hockey player Sam Quek is one of the contestants in the twenty second series of Strictly Come Dancing. The news was revealed on The One Show on iPlayer and BBC One.
Following the announcement, she said, “As a former hockey player I’m used to playing as part of a team, but the thought of dancing on the Ballroom floor in front of a live audience is quite daunting! I’m chuffed to be a part of this legendary show and Quickstep into the shoes of a performer, it feels absolutely surreal but I’m ready for every bit of the adventure.”
Other new contestants in the series include; Tasha Ghouri, Dr Punam Krishan, Chris McCausland, Toyah Willcox, Pete Wicks, Montell Douglas and Paul Merson among others.

Quek is married to her husband, Tom Mairs. Tom Mairs is a property entrepreneur who appeared as the titular “Secret Millionaire” on the reality show of the same name in 2010.
She is a supporter of Liverpool and counts their former striker Ian Rush as one of her sporting heroes. She is also a fan of the Kansas City Chiefs. Quek was appointed an MBE in the 2017 New Year’s Honours List for services to hockey.

When she was about a month old, her family moved from Coniston Street in Liverpool to the suburb of West Derby. They later moved to the Wirral Peninsula when she was five.
