Sashi Cheliah born Sashikumar Cheliah is a Singaporean-born Australian cook living in Adelaide. He was a contestant on the tenth series of MasterChef Australia in 2018, eventually winning the show. For 12 years, he worked for the Special Tactics and Rescue (STAR) unit of the Singapore Police Force, where he trained in tactics, rescue operations, counter-terrorism, kidnappings, and high-profile protection in the riot police. He was eliminated from the show on Sunday, May 15, 2022. Following his elimination, he said, “I made a wrong choice,” Sashi told 10 play following his elimination, adding that it wasn’t so much the dish but his focus. While he attempted to make his dosas, Sashi’s attention shifted from his fish curry, which caught and burned at the bottom.”
“I did not realize, it was a surprise for me,” Sashi admitted. “I put the fish in the curry sauce about six or seven minutes before plating up and then put the dosas together with it. “One thing I failed to realize was the flame was pretty high, so the fish was cooked perfectly but the bottom bit of the pot got a bit burned and that flavor has been infused throughout in the curry. I didn’t realize until the verdict was given.” Standing in the bottom two, when the judges announced that Sashi would be leaving everyone’s jaws dropped. Everyone except Sashi.
“Funny thing was, I was pretty chill about the elimination, I was going around consoling everyone like ‘Don’t cry, don’t cry,’” he said, laughing. “When you cook, you know whether it’s a good cook or a bad cook. If something happens, I know it’s my fault, nothing else to blame.”
His interest in food started by watching his mother, who owned a café, and his aunties prepare family meals. His interest in cooking grew further after he moved to Australia. His goal is to open a fusion restaurant featuring Indian and South Asian flavors. Cheliah was selected in the Top 24 to contest MasterChef Australia in 2018. He reached the finale on July 31, 2018, which he won with a record 93 points out of 100.
After Masterchef, he began a pop-up restaurant named Gaja by Sashi in the Melbourne CBD, serving Singaporean dishes. In November 2019, Sashi opened his restaurant Gaja in his hometown of Adelaide. In 2020, his son, Ryan participated in Junior MasterChef Australia (series 3) but was eliminated on October 13, 2020. Cheliah was brought up in Singapore where he attended Swiss Cottage Secondary School and ITE College, Yishun.
