Shane Yellowbird was a Cree-Canadian country music singer-songwriter from Hobbema, Alberta. In 2007, he was named the Aboriginal Entertainer of the Year at the Aboriginal People’s Choice Music Awards, Chevy Trucks’ Rising Star of the Year at the Canadian Country Music Awards and his “Pickup Truck” was one of the year’s ten most-played country songs.

He was signed by O’Reilly International in 2003. Three years later, he released his debut album titled Life Is Calling My Name. The album includes the singles “Beautiful Concept,” “They’re All About You,” “Pickup Truck” and “I Remember the Music.” In November 2006, Yellowbird won three awards at the Aboriginal People’s Choice Music Awards ceremony, including Best New Artist, Single of the Year (“Beautiful Concept”), and Best Video (“Beautiful Concept”). Yellowbird opened for Emerson Drive on their cross-Canada tour and was chosen to represent his native Canada by performing at the Fourth Annual Global Artist Party at the CMA Music Festival in June 2007. He was named the Chevy Trucks Rising Star of the Year at the 2007 Canadian Country Music Awards.

“On behalf of the Yellowbird and Buffalo family, it is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved Shane Ryan Yellowbird. Shane was 42 years old residing in Calgary, Alberta, when he took his last breath. Our brother was a talented artist who loved his children, music, and sports. We are all deeply struck by the tragedy and ask for respect and privacy during this time to mourn the loss of our loved one. Funeral services will be held in his hometown of Maskwacis on Friday, April 29, 2022, at 10 a.m.”

She also added, “It’s been a shock. We’re just trying to support each other and be there for each other. We have people across Canada contacting us, in the States. We’re just trying to process this. Shane was our golden boy. He made me, as the older sister, so proud. My dad and my mother were so proud of him. Our family, Maskwacis as a whole, was so proud of him. The First Nations community across Canada was so proud of him. I remember the first time my mom and I heard him on the radio. We were at a drive-thru and we both started crying. Now we’re crying for another reason.”

She also went ahead to thank the radio stations for their support, adding it’s hard but comforting to hear Shane’s music. The family is also asking for privacy while they grieve. “Thank you to radio stations and the fans and everyone who loved him. We’re getting a lot of messages and we feel the love.”
