Shuai Wang is the chef and owner at Jackrabbit Filly & King BBQ living in North Charleston, South Carolina. He is a contestant in the 22nd season of Top Chef – Top Chef: Destination Canada.
Born in Beijing, China, and raised in Queens, N.Y., from the age of 9, Chef Shuai Wang grew up surrounded by the flavors of his grandmother’s and mother’s cooking. However, it was not until he took a high school culinary class and read Anthony Bourdain’s “Kitchen Confidential” that he discovered his passion for professional cooking.
Shuai honed his skills at the Art Institute of New York, balancing an intense course load while volunteering at the James Beard House whenever possible. His career flourished after he and his wife, Corrie, moved to North Charleston, S.C., where his innovative approach to New Chinese American cuisine gained national attention.
His food truck, Short Grain, was recognized as one of America’s Top 50 Best New Restaurants by Bon Appétit, and in 2017, he earned a James Beard Award nomination for Rising Star Chef. Today, he is the chef-owner of Jackrabbit Filly, a celebrated heritage-driven New Chinese American restaurant, and King BBQ, a Chinese BBQ concept infused with Southern smoke—recognized by Southern Living Magazine as a Top 10 Best New BBQ Restaurant of 2024 and by Bon Appétit as one of 2024’s Top 20 Best New Restaurants.
Alongside his wife, Shuai was honored as StarChef Charleston Restaurateur of the Year 2024 and most recently named a 2025 South Carolina Chef Ambassador, further solidifying his impact on the culinary scene.

This season’s grand prize includes $250,000; $125,000 in Delta flight credit; a feature in Food & Wine magazine; and an appearance at the annual Food & Wine Classic. Plus, the winner will have a chance to present at The James Beard Restaurant and Chef Awards in Chicago, Ill., and to headline an exclusive dinner at the James Beard house in New York. Quickfire Challenges are back, so the chefs will also be competing for $150,000 in cash prizes throughout the season.

He is married to his wife,Corrie Wang. In his twenties, he met a gal working at a restaurant in the West Village of NYC. She grew up in Buffalo, NY, was an aspiring author, used to be known for always being sunny, and she instantly knew he was a keeper. She was the incomparable Corrie Wang. Together the couple moved to Charleston, SC where they got married, Corrie sold her first novel, and they opened a food truck all within the same week. It was the hardest thing they had ever done.
