Simon Yu is the elected mayor of Prince George, making him the first person of color to hold the position. Yu, an engineer, has promised to build emergency shelters to address the city’s housing crisis. He immigrated to Canada in 1972 at the age of 15. He then proceeded to Prince George’s College. He is a 1984 UBC graduate, a professional structural engineer, a business owner, a teacher, a property developer, and a community builder. He was also an instructor at CNC, and a member of the board of directors of UNBC, Prince George Airport Authority, and the Downtown Business Association.
His primary working experience includes decades of engineering consulting services in Northern B.C. He was an instrumental leader in the 2003 Aceh Post Tsunami housing relief effort. He was also the municipal manager for Rankin Inlet, Nunavut for a period of two years. He believes the greatest skill that he would bring to the council table is that he has the ability to get things done in a logical, orderly, and efficient manner. Over the past 40 years, he has been known to the Northern B.C. construction community as the go-to problem-solver according to the princegeorgepost.
In his campaigns, he has stated that he will concentrate on the area East of Queensway, which situates in a 200-year flood zone first. He envisions a few big sumps (canals with slough gates) that can revive this area of the city. A prosperous commercial/residential district east of Queensway should help to solve the current downtown issues and foster a vibrant business and social environment.

He is married and has his own family. He is a father of six children. He is also blessed to be a grandfather of eight grandchildren from his first three kids. They are Leeway a sales representative, Reena who is a medical doctor and physician, Jordan serving as a PE teacher at St.Mary’s Prince George and who also runs a roller dome, Nathan a basketball player, Anakin pursuing a master’s degree in music and piano, and Bruce a structural engineer.

His family initially came from Hong Kong before he relocated to Prince George, British Columbia at the age of 15. He has a brother who resides in England.
